PLAYER UPDATES Provided By SportsBuff.com
Player: Percy Harvin WR, Florida Gators 08/27/08, Time: 11:34 pm
 Status:
Out
News: Florida head coach Steve Spurrier made it official Wednesday, wide receiver Percy Harvin will not play in Saturday's season opener against Hawaii. Harvin has been trying to recover from surgery on his heel and has hardly practiced this fall. His status for Week 2 is still uncertain. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Julio Jones WR, Alabama Crimson Tide 08/27/08, Time: 11:32 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Highly touted freshman WR Julio Jones will get the start for Alabama Saturday against Clemson. Jones, a big receiver with big-time speed and scoring ability, has been making lots of plays in practice.
 Analysis:

Jones, the top WR prospect in this year's class, could be a big-time fantasy prospect now that he's earned a starting spot. With veteran QB John Parker Wilson running the offense, Jones has a good chance to get his career started on a good note. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Greg Middleton DE, Indiana Hoosiers 08/27/08, Time: 11:25 pm
 Status:
Cold
News: Indiana announced it has suspended last season's sack leader, Greg Middleton. Middleton and three other players have been suspended for what were termed disciplinary reasons. Middleton, who had 16 sacks and was named a third-team All-American a year ago, will be out for the season opener against Western Kentucky. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Ben Mauk QB, Cincinnati Bearcats 08/26/08, Time: 9:25 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: The NCAA has told former Cincinnati QB Ben Mauk that it is still considering his appeal for another year of eligibility. Mauk, whose original appeal was denied by the NCAA as fall practice began, has submitted a new appeal based on new information. Mauk will be allowed to talk to the appeals committee by phone on Thursday to make his case. Stay tuned. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Glen Coffee RB, Alabama Crimson Tide 08/26/08, Time: 9:20 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Glen Coffee will be Alabama's starting RB for now, but he's going to be pressed by last year's leading rusher Terry Grant and highly-touted frosh Mark Ingram.
 Analysis:

Though Coffee will be the starter, look for all three of these backs to see playing time, diffusing the value of each individually. I'd wait and see who takes hold of the job. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Cordera Eason RB, Mississippi Rebels 08/26/08, Time: 9:16 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Mississippi RB Cordera Eason is the starter for the Rebs heading into the season opener against Memphis. Eason's hold on the top job isn't a slam dunk though, as freshman Brandon Bolden appears to be in line for some carries, too.
 Analysis:

Eason should see the majority of carries against Memphis, but Bolden has been pressing for playing time. Against Memphis, Eason should have a good day on the ground. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Running back RB, Connecticut Huskies 08/26/08, Time: 9:13 pm
 Status:
Doubtful
News: Uconn's projected starting RB Andre Dixon twisted an ankle in practice and is listed as day-to-day for the season opener Saturday.
 Analysis:

If Dixon can't go, backup Donald Brown would get the lion's share of the carries, making him a decent pickup this week. Dixon will be evaluated as the week goes on and a decision will be made at the end of the week. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Van Alexander LB, Missouri Tigers 08/26/08, Time: 6:15 pm
 Status:
Doubtful
News: Missouri's starting linebacker Van Alexander looks like he'll miss the Tigers season-opener Saturday. Alexander is recovering from ACL surgery to his right knee and there is doubt he might be ready to test the knee for real. He has been practicing with the team, but has yet to go full speed.
 Analysis:

If Alexander misses Saturday's game, it will impact the Mizzou run defense a bit. Illinois running game is iffy, so it might not make a difference -- but it might. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Running back RB, Cincinnati Bearcats 08/26/08, Time: 6:04 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Cincinnati's running back situation gained a little clarity Monday when Jacob Ramsey was named the starter for Saturday. Ramsey will have to fend off the challenge of freshmen Isaiah Pead and Darrin Williams, who have been pushing for playing time.
 Analysis:

With Ben Mauk on the shelf, the likelihood that the Cinncy offense becomes more run-oriented is much higher, so Ramsey could be a solid contributor if he takes hold of the job from the outset. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Mark Sanchez QB, Southern California Trojans 08/26/08, Time: 5:46 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: USC quarterback Mark Sanchez went through a full practice Monday and looked like he was recovered from a dislocated kneecap the first week of practice. He looked so good, in fact, that it appears likely he'll be under center Saturday when the Trojans open their season. Coach Pete Carroll isn't saying the Sanchez will start, but it's very likely, if there are no setbacks, that he'll get the lion's share of the reps. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Kellen Lewis QB, Indiana Hoosiers 08/26/08, Time: 5:43 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Indiana QB Kellen Lewis has apparently worked his way back into the good graces of the coaching staff. Lewis was named the team's starter for Saturday's season opener. Lewis, last year's starter, was suspended for all of spring practice, which threw him into a battle with Ben Chappell. Lewis, who accounted for 37 TDs a year ago, had to re-win the job after his suspension.
 Analysis:

Now that the suspense is over, look for Lewis to continue his productive running and passing ways. Fantasy owners who cast their lot with Lewis must be breathing easier now. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Daryll Clark QB, Penn State Nittany Lions 08/26/08, Time: 5:39 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Penn State announced today that Daryll Clark will be its starting QB this Saturday. Clark was the frontrunner after a good performance at last year's Alamo Bowl, but had to fend off challenges from Pat Devlin and, to a lesser extent, Paul Cianciolo. Paterno said each has had his moments in fall camp, but Clark's experience and fall camp performance won him the job. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Quarterback QB, Virginia Tech Hokies 08/26/08, Time: 5:37 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: The Virginia Tech quarterback situation is starting to clear. You may remember that Sean Glennon was tabbed the team's starter last week. That stays the same, but coach Frank Beamer has indicated he'd like to redshirt sophomore Tyrod Taylor this year, making Cory Holt the No. 2 QB on the squad. Taylor has big-time playmaking ability, so redshirting him makes sense from a long-term QB standpoint. An interesting aspect of this decision, though, is that Taylor will apparently travel with the team. Beamer did say this was the plan, but injuries or poor play could change this situation. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Running back RB, South Carolina Gamecocks 08/26/08, Time: 12:15 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: South Carolina has decided on a running back by tabbing Taylor Rank as the starter for week 1. Rank had been battling Mike Davis and Brian Maddox for first unit reps and likely will still share some carries with those two. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Quarterback QB, Nevada Wolf Pack 08/26/08, Time: 12:13 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: The Nevada quarterback battle is over for now, with Colin Kaepernick tabbed to start the season. Kaepernick had been locked in a QB duel with Colin Graziano and has won the competition.
 Analysis:

Kaepernick could be a nice fantasy nugget, but don't think Graziano is out of the picture. It's very likely Graziano will get some game reps, too. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Wide receiver WR, Texas A&M Aggies 08/26/08, Time: 12:11 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Texas Aamp;M freshman WR Jeff Fuller has been given a starting assignment for the season opener. Fuller is a big body with good speed and could be a factor in the passing game. As a freshman, though, it's probably best to let him settle in and see what he, and the Aggies passing game, are capable of. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Kenny Lewis RB, Virginia Tech Hokies 08/26/08, Time: 12:09 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Virginia Tech running back Kenny Lewis has been tabbed the starter for the Hokies heading into the season opener against East Carolina.
 Analysis:

Lewis may be the starter, but unless he can grab hold of the spot with good early play, this could be a position that rotates game by game, quarter by quarter or even series by series. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Rob Gronkowski TE, Arizona Wildcats 08/25/08, Time: 6:42 pm
 Status:
Out
News: Arizona TE Rob Gronkowski has been ruled out of Saturday's opener with what team doctors are calling strep throat. Coach Mike Stoops said that Gronkowski shouldn't miss a lot of time, but he is being tested for mono as well. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Nathan Costa QB, Oregon Ducks 08/25/08, Time: 5:23 pm
 Status:
Out
News: Oregon's Nathan Costa won the QB job only to be lost for up to two months. Cost tore cartilege in his left knee Wednesday and will undergo surgery that could put him out for up to 10 weeks. Doctors are unsure about any ACL or MCL damage, but will determine that during surgery. That means QB Justin Roper will get the majority of snaps in the season opener. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Chris McGaha WR, Arizona State Sun Devils 08/25/08, Time: 4:28 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Arizona State WR Chris McGaha returned to practice over the weekend. The junior WR led the Sun Devils in receptions and receiving yards a year ago, but missed 10 practices and a pair of scrimmages while battling a sore ankle. If he has no setbacks between now and Saturday, he'll play.
 Analysis:

McGaha may be less than 100 percent, but if he plays he'll get some looks from QB Rudy Carpenter, which makes him potentially very productive. We should know more later in the week. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Quarterback QB, Miami-Florida Hurricanes 08/25/08, Time: 4:24 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: With starter Robert Marve suspended for the opener, Miami head coach has indicated that true freshman Jacory Harris will be his QB Saturday against Charleston Southern.
 Analysis:

Harris won two state high school titles in Florida and should experience some success against Charleston Southern. Still, this is not a QB situation I'd pin my fantasy hopes to this week as the Hurricanes will try to pound the ball. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Defensive back DB, Texas Longhorns 08/25/08, Time: 4:18 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Texas put up its first depth chart recently and the Longhorns list two freshmen as starters at safety. Earl Thomas and Blake Gideon will presumbably start against Florida Atlantic on Saturday. What's even more interesting is that the top three reserves behind those two are also freshmen.
 Analysis:

The Longhorn secondary could see plenty of action as teams seek to test these youngsters at safety. It will be interesting to see what kind of numbers Florida Atlantic puts up in the passing game in the opener. This could be a trouble spot due to youth or an unexpected positive. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Linebacker LB, Florida Gators 08/25/08, Time: 4:14 pm
 Status:
Doubtful
News: Florida MLB Brandon Spikes may miss Saturday's opener against Hawaii in what's being termed a right foot injury. He'll be re-evaluated as the week continues.
 Analysis:

Losing Spikes could be a big blow to the Florida defense, though they should be fine against a Hawaii offense that is in complete reconstruction mode. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Percy Harvin WR, Florida Gators 08/25/08, Time: 4:11 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Florida WR Percy Harvin is looking more and more questionable for the season opener Saturday against Hawaii. Harvin practiced over the weekend, but has yet to go full-out in practice due to heel issues. Harvin had surgery on the heel and has been slow coming back from it. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Jorvorskie Lane RB, Texas A&M Aggies 08/25/08, Time: 4:09 pm
 Status:
Doubtful
News: Texas Aamp;M RB Jorvorskie Lane is listed as doubtful for the Aggies season opener against Arkansas State. Lane sustained a neck stinger on Aug. 13 and the injury continues to plague him. He hasn't been involved in contact drills since the injury happened.
 Analysis:

At this point I'd look for an alternative to Lane if you have him. Neck stingers are painful and tend to be something coaching staffs don't mess around with. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Sean Glennon QB, Virginia Tech Hokies 08/24/08, Time: 9:28 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: It's looking more likely that Sean Glennon will be tabbed the No. 1 QB for the Virginia Tech Hokies this season. Glennon was superb in the team's final scrimmage, hitting 12 of 16 throws and two touchdowns. He's been battling Tyrod Taylor for the starting job, but this latest scrimmage probably means Glennon wins the job. Expect Taylor, who has plenty of speed and playmaking ability, to get reps, too. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Running back RB, Virginia Tech Hokies 08/24/08, Time: 9:25 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: The battle for the starting RB position at Virginia Tech continues to be a toss-up. Both Darren Evans and Josh Oglesby looked very good in the Hokies final scrimmage. Both got six carries with Evans getting 61 yards and Oglesby totaling 45. You could see a sharing of carries between the two until things get sorted out. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Wide receiver WR, Alabama Crimson Tide 08/24/08, Time: 6:11 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: According to Alabama coach Nick Saban, two of the most consistent wide receivers so far in camp have been veteran Mike McCoy and highly regarded freshman Julio Jones. Saban said he will play a bunch of true freshmen from his highly regarded recruiting class and Jones will be one of them. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Tight end TE, Miami-Florida Hurricanes 08/24/08, Time: 6:06 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Miami coach Randy Shannon called his tight ends the most improved unit on the team and expects Derrick Epps to lead a much more productive TE group this season.
 Analysis:

With the QB situation still developing, look for the team's tight ends to be more involved in the offense from the outset. Epps could be a very nice fantasy TE as the Hurricanes break in a new quarterback. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Wide receiver WR, Miami-Florida Hurricanes 08/24/08, Time: 6:04 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: According to a Miami Herald story, Miami head coach Randy Shannon has indicated that he'll play 8 or 9 WRs this season, including 4 or 5 newcomers as that position shakes itself out.
 Analysis:

As a unit, the Miami WR corps may produce good numbers, but it may take a while to see which individuals are worth a darn from a fantasy perspective, particularly if Percy Harvin struggles to come back from a heel injury. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Sam Bradford QB, Oklahoma Sooners 08/24/08, Time: 1:51 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Sam Bradford's stunning freshman campaign could be just the beginning. According to Oklahoma QB coach Josh Heupel, Bradford has been more consistent, more mature and more in command of the offense this fall. His arm is also stronger and he's been making better decisions, according to Heupel.
 Analysis:

It's hard to imagine an encoure (36 TDs, led the nation in passing efficiency) to top 2007, but with the weapons the Sooners have offensively, a better all-around Bradford could mean better all-around numbers for fantasy owners this fall. He'll carry this offense, so he should get plenty of chances to put points on the board. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Kicker K, Iowa State Cyclones 08/24/08, Time: 1:40 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: The Iowa State kicking game will be looking at two freshmen this fall -- Zach Guyer and Grant Mahoney. The two have been battling for the kicking job all fall and coach Gene Chizik still isn't sure who the No. 1 is.
 Analysis:

This looks like a situation that will be fluid for a while as the two freshmen contend with the pressures of major college football. This is not a kicking situation I'd put a lot of faith in from a fantasy perspective right now. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Percy Harvin WR, Florida Gators 08/24/08, Time: 1:25 pm
 Status:
Cold
News: There's been a Percy Harvin sighting. Florida's top playmaker stepped onto the practice field for the first time Saturday as he works to get back from a heel injury. coach Urban Meyer indicated there was a chance Harvin might be ready to play in the season opener versus Hawaii.
 Analysis:

The thought here is that Florida decides to give Harvin a little extra time to heal his heel and won't rush him back for a game that figures to be big Florida win. Adjust your lineups accordingly. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Rob Gronkowski TE, Arizona Wildcats 08/24/08, Time: 1:21 pm
 Status:
Cold
News: Arizona TE Rob Gronkowski missed Sunday's practice with what team officials termed "strep throat." They are testing to see if he has mono, however. if it is mono, Gronkowski could be out for a while, depending on the severity. His likely replacement would be A.J. Simmons. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Wide receiver WR, Central Florida Golden Knights 08/23/08, Time: 11:23 pm
 Status:

News: The UCF receiving corps took a hit when it lost projected starting WR Kamar Aiken for up to four week with a foot injury. He has a stress fracutre in the fifth metatarsal bone of his foot. There was, however, some good news for the UCF WR corps when Notre Dame transfer Richard Jackson. NCAA rules require Jackson to sit out a year, but UCF coaches say they'll appeal for a hardship ruling for Jackson to see if they can get him on the field quicker. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Tight end TE, Michigan State Spartans 08/23/08, Time: 11:14 pm

News: Charlie Gantt will step into the top TE spot this year for the Michigan State Spartans. He'll try to replace Kellen Davis, who now plies his trade with the Chicago Bears. Gantt made huge strides in the off-season to earn the starting spot.
 Analysis:

Michigan State runs a pro-style offense which requires the TE to be a pass catcher. That makes Gantt a likely target in short yardage situation or around the goal line. That could benefit fantasy owners looking for TE depth. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Robert Marve QB, Miami-Florida Hurricanes 08/23/08, Time: 10:57 pm
 Status:
Cold
News: According to a Miami Herald story, Miami QB Robert Marve has been suspended for the Hurricanes first game on Aug. 28. According to the story, Marve was suspended for an incident that happened last season. He was expected to be tabbed to start the season opener. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Wide receiver WR, Southern Methodist Mustangs 08/23/08, Time: 10:49 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: The receiving picture cleared a little at SMU as coach June Jones named three receiving starters for his run-and-shoot offense. Aldrick Robinson, Josh Bryant and Zach Zimmerman were tabbed starters by Jones on Saturday.
 Analysis:

SMU is going to throw the ball...and throw it some more, so its receivers are going to catch a good number of passes. What they do with them in terms of yards and scores is a mystery as the run-and-shoot gets implemented. Still, the sheer volume of passing and catching that will go on makes all three receivers, the QB and the passing offense as a unit worthy of a long look. (John Baker/PFS)

Player: Running back RB, East Carolina Pirates 08/23/08, Time: 3:54 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: East Carolina is still trying to sort out its RB situation. After Chris Johnson took his 4.24 speed and 2,960 total yards to the NFL, it looked like Dominique Lindsay was set to step in. Mid-August knee surgery derailed those plans and now new coach Skip Holtz is looking at a RBBC situation of Jonathan Williams, Norman Whitley and J.R. Rogers. All have speed, but it remains to be seen if any are a feature back. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Knowshon Moreno RB, Georgia Bulldogs 08/23/08, Time: 3:46 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Georgia's starting RB Knowshon Moreno didn't practice Friday because he's still nursing a sore shoulder. The plan is to go live with Moreno next week and see where he's at. No one expects him to miss the season opener. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Kevin Craft QB, UCLA Bruins 08/23/08, Time: 3:38 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: UCLA QB Kevin Craft looked shaky in the team's Friday practice, according to an LA Times story. Craft was intercepted three straight times at one point, continuing a tendency of throwing interceptions that reared its head in the spring. Craft will remain the starter, but coach Rick Neuheisel said that his new starting QB took a step backwards in the practice. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Terrelle Pryor QB, Ohio State Buckeyes 08/23/08, Time: 3:34 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Ohio State coach Jim Tressel has confirmed that super frosh QB Terrelle Pryor is going to see the field plenty this fall. Todd Boeckman is still the undisputed starter, but Pryor's unique talents have demanded that he sees playing time this early this fall. He could help the OSU QB unit produce some very nice numbers. Individually, he probably won't play enough to make a big dent on a fantasy roster. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Punter P, Florida State Seminoles 08/23/08, Time: 3:27 pm

Out
News: Florida State punter Graham Gano underwent surgery to repair damaged cartilege in his right knee Friday. The early prognosis is that he'll be out from 4 to 6 weeks. Gano was planning to handle both punting and place kicking duties, so his injury leaves a big hole. Right now, it looks like Zach Hobby will handle kicking duties while freshman Shawn Powell deals with the punting. Youngsters in those positions could mean some special team struggles. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Running back RB, Oregon Ducks 08/23/08, Time: 3:22 pm

News: Oregon RB LaGarrette Blount made quite an impression in the Ducks final scrimmage Friday. Blount rumbled for 84 yards on four carries, prompting coach Mike Bellotti to confirm that the JC transfer will see plenty of playing time. Blount is a big back with plenty of speed, so he may be a TD poacher around the goal line. Either way, he figures to form a very nice RB tandem with starter Jeremiah Johnson, who didn't take part in the scrimmage due to a tender hamstring. (John Baker/PFS)
Player: Quarterback QB, Oregon Ducks 08/23/08, Time: 3:18 pm

News: According to head coach Mike Belloti, the quarterback competition at Oregon is now a dead heat and both Nate Costa and Justin Roper will be getting reps in the season opener against Washington. Costa looked to be in the lead, but suffered an injury last week, opening the door for Roper to make a case for playing time. No matter who's QBing this offense, the separate units will be capable of producing numbers. On an individual basis, split snaps doesn't do much for the QB spot. (John Baker/PFS)

News: The Iowa State coaching staff has tabbed sophomore QB Austen Arnaud as its starter. The Iowa State offense is a work in progress and Arnaud will no doubt have growing pains along with there rest of the offense. Still,
